What is Expressive Arts Therapy?

Expressive Arts Therapy employs creative techniques to assist individuals in examining their emotions, enhancing mental well-being, and promoting personal development.

This approach incorporates a variety of art forms, including visual arts, music, sand therapy, and writing, to encourage self-expression and self-discovery. It focuses on the creative process as a way to comprehend and process thoughts and feelings, particularly for those who find it challenging to articulate their experiences.

Sand Tray Therapy

Sand Tray Therapy

  • Sand tray therapy is a warm and inviting therapeutic approach that uses a sand tray and tiny objects. This creative method helps individuals express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a non-verbal way. By crafting three-dimensional scenes in the sand, it reflects a person's inner world, encouraging emotional processing and healing.

Solutions-Focused Therapy

  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal-focused evidence-based therapeutic approach that incorporates positive psychology principles and practices, and which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems. At its core, SFBT is a hope-friendly, positive emotion-eliciting, future-oriented framework for formulating, motivating, achieving, and sustaining desired behavioral change.

Practitioners of SFBT develop solutions by first crafting a detailed vision of how the client’s life will look once the problem is resolved or their situation has improved to their satisfaction. Together, the therapist and client then carefully search through the client’s life experience and behavioral repertoire to discover the necessary resources needed to find sustainable solutions that the client can readily implement. Typically, this process involves identifying and exploring previous “exceptions,” e.g. times when the client has successfully coped with or addressed previous difficulties and challenges. In an inherently respectful and practical interview process, SF therapists and their clients consistently collaborate in identifying goals reflective of clients’ best hopes and developing satisfying solutions.

Acceptance/Commitment Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of mental health treatment that encourages you to recognize and reflect on your relationship with your thoughts and emotions. Rather than attempting to change your feelings, you will learn to comprehend them. This process involves redefining your values and modifying your behaviors to align more closely with them.

It is normal to experience negative thoughts and emotions; it does not define your character. Sometimes, your mind may be inclined to dwell on negative feelings rather than moving past them. This tendency can impact your mental and physical well-being, along with your performance at work or school and your social interactions. Mental health professionals can assist you in rewiring your thought patterns to prevent negativity from dominating your life.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is accessible to anyone interested in participating. Research indicates that this therapeutic approach is particularly effective for adolescents and adults. It does require the use of abstract thinking—grasping concepts that are not tangible—which can be challenging for younger children to fully understand.

Psychoanalytical Therapy

  • Psychoanalytic therapy includes deep and meaningful talk that digs into the unconscious mind. It helps us understand how our past, especially childhood experiences, shapes our current thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The idea is to bring what's hidden in our minds to the surface, giving us a chance to see our patterns more clearly and tackle any emotional issues lurking beneath the surface.

Goals of psychoanalytic therapy include increased self-awareness, conflict resolution related to past trauma, improved and healthier relationships, and reduced stress.
